Make Your Own

Rather than buy everything at the store, some of the items needed to spice up your meals can be made at home. Here are a few suggestions.

+ To make orange or lemon peel, place the grated peel in a small bowl. Heat on HIGH in the microwave for 30 seconds to one minute or until dry. Stir once. Store in tightly covered bottles.

+ To make baking powder, you need 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon cornstarch. Sift the ingredients and use or cover in an air tight tin. (This recipe yields only around 1 Tablespoon of baking powder. Increase as needed.)

+ To make brown sugar stir 1 Tablespoon of molasses with 1 cup of granulated sugar until completely mixed. If you want dark brown sugar, use 2 Tablespoons of molasses.
