I must admit, this recipe was never going to be made. It was one of the most frustrating recipes. Not because it was difficult, but because I kept forgetting a key ingredient. The first time I forgot the vanilla pods. Then I realized we didn’t have any grappa or vodka around the house, which was shocking in itself.
Out of frustration, I wrote the complete list of ingredients and triple checked that I had everything on the list at the cashier, as by now it was a pride issue—the task needed to be completed.
The good news is, it’s worth it. Let’s be serious: butter, sugar, and alcohol drizzled on fruit and baked in the oven. It’s not possible for the pears not to be a winning treat.

Directions
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Wash the pear. Cut a small slice from the bottom of each pear so that they will stand in the dish. Butter a baking dish that will hold the pears. Break the cinnamon in half, split the vanilla pods.
Rub some butter over each pear, place in dish, and sprinkle over the sugar, vanilla and cinnamon sticks, and cover the dish with foil.
Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes, then remove the foil, add the grappa. Return to the oven and bake for a further 20 minutes or until pears are very tender.
Serve warm with the juices and creme fraiche.
