This morning I woke up and found a text message from my friend Jen: see you in two hours, I’m off to the farmer’s market. While in bed, I texted her: would love a mystery bag of veggies and fruit :) Two hours later, I have one of falls first pumpkins, a cluster of bright orange carrots with their green tops, juicy red dry farm tomatoes, a bunch of kale, and colorful chard.
This carrot and pumpkin soup is inspired by my mystery veggie box, and by the gloomy San Francisco weather. Here I’ve combined, carrots and pumpkin with a heaping bright tablespoon of smoked paprika. I chose the paprika spice because of its color. Both the carrot and pumpkin are orange. I haven’t chosen a spice to add to a dish in this way, usually it’s because of the flavor, but it really works. The flavors are soft, earthy, warm and healthy which is wonderful, as it makes up for last nights fried chicken and waffles.
