I found myself today with nothing to do. Laundry was complete, errands done, dishes washed and put away, voice mails returned, and even a trip to the gym ticked off my list. So, I decided to make myself a nice afternoon beverage. This is my first drink recipe for Jane Spice. With so many variations for Bloody Mary recipes, I chose this recipe as I was curious about the addition of sherry. I never knew Bloody Mary drinks had sherry, plus I had a bottle of sherry lying around and had been wanting to use it for a while. This recipe definitely passed the test. It’s delicious and packs a punch with the Tabasco sauce, Spanish smoked paprika and black pepper.
Do you know how the name and origin of the drink came about? According to Wikipedia two men claim they created the Bloody Mary, the first a Frenchmen while working at Harry’s Bar in Paris in the 1920’s, and the second an American claimed he created the drink in 1939. I guess the origin will always remain a mystery but at least we know the name came from a number of historical figures, namely Queen Mary I of England.

“You should add in some Worcestershire Sauce and horseraddish as well, it gives in an extra kick - I had one with Tapatio sauce as opposed to Tabasco in Mexico recently and that was really nice twist.
As for the name and origin, it was first made in Harry's Bar in Paris, which was owned by a American and served the de-mobbed American GI's after WW1 - if you are ever in Paris, it has some of the best cocktails in town, particularly Martinis.
The Mary in question was Marie Stuart or Mary Queen of Scots, who was Queen Elizabeth 1st's cousin. Queen Elizabeth had her executed and it took 2 or 3 blows of the axe to do the job, hence the Bloody Mary.”
